Beginner-Friendly Crochet Pattern: The Autumn Air Pullover

crochet pullover sweater pattern

March 15, 2020 //  by tigerseyehandmade

This cozy pullover sweater has simple construction and is super easy to make. It would be a great first sweater project. In fact, for many of the testers, it actually was their first crochet sweater!

Inspiration

Often I am inspired by the fashion in catalogues or stores. I see something I like and think, “I wonder if I can make that.” It is a fun challenge and usually (depending on the yarn) a great way for me to save money.

There were a few sweaters that stood out to me from Free People and Forever 21. They had similar features, v-neck with a seam down the front center, and a cropped high-low hem.

Process

I took this sweater shape and began sketching it out in my notebook. From there, I decided on the stitch pattern that I would like to work with for my crochet pattern. The library offers a number of great resources and books on crochet. Looking through a stitch dictionary that I had borrowed, I found a few options to try out.

Next, I played around with the various stitch patterns using my yarn of choice, Caron Simply Soft. Using a couple different crochet hook sizes, I made a swatch of each to compare the resulting fabric and the drape.

Considering the level of difficulty and the overall look, I chose the winning stitch pattern and hook size. Despite how easy it is to create, the stitches look quite elegant. The best part is that it uses simple stitches like the double crochet!

Creating the Pattern

From the swatch, I measure my gauge and start calculations for making my own size. I typically use my own measurements combined with the standards from the Craft Yarn Council to determine the finished dimensions that I would like.

For this pattern I knew that I wanted an oversized look, so from these measurements, I added an additional 5-7 inches. This is what is referred to as positive ease.
