Bulky Crochet Infinity Scarf – Free Crochet Pattern

September 25, 2020 //  by tigerseyehandmade

The Winter Tide Infinity Scarf

This beautiful, textured, and wavy circle scarf works up in a jiffy. The pattern calls for a bulky weight yarn- I used Lion Brand Scarfie. Wearing this scarf is sure to bring you the serene comfort that comes with watching the waves of the ocean.

Construction

This infinity scarf is worked up in continuous rounds, without any turning. You simply join with a slip stitch and continue on with the next pattern row. Once you get the wavy repeat down, it becomes very easy to memorize and the scarf flows into creation.

Inspiration

free crochet scarf pattern winter tide infinity scarf

It is no secret that many of my projects are inspired by the ocean. This circle scarf has a shape that is inspired by the rise and fall of the waves as they flow into shore. One of my favorite things in the world is sitting where the land meets the sea, to watch the waves come crashing in. It is supremely relaxing, and I wanted this scarf to give that same calming feeling.

Yarn

This infinity scarf works up with just one ball of Lion Brand Scarfie. Scarfie is a wool-acrylic, Bulky weight yarn full of cozy squish. There is a broad range of beautiful colorways to choose from. I found the Teal/Silver color at Michael’s one day and immediately had the vision of it becoming an ocean-inspired make. The ombre striping effect is quite lovely! There is a very smooth shift from one color to the next.

Materials:

Yarn: about 300 yards of Bulky Weight 5, Such as Lion Brand Scarfie

Crochet Hook: 10 mm

Tapestry Needle

Scissors

Gauge Swatch Instructions:

To make a gauge swatch, chain 28 and follow the pattern instructions from joining the chain in the round up through row 4. These two wave repeats should be about 14” in length and  3” in height.

It isn’t critical to meet gauge for this scarf.

Dimensions:

72” diameter by 8” wide

Skill Level:

Easy

Techniques and abbreviations (US terms):

dc- double crochet

bpsc- (back post single crochet): insert the hook from back to front around the stitch in the row below, then back out, yarn over, yarn over and pull through.

ss- slip stitch

sc- single crochet

tr- treble crochet

st- stitch

ch- chain

yo-  yarn over

cont- continue

rep- repeat

sk- skip

sp- space

nxt- next

hk- hook

t-turn

Pattern Notes:

  1. This scarf is worked in continuous rounds. The join happens into the first stitch of the round. You can place a stitch marker in the first stitch in order to help you remember where to join when you reach the end of the round.
  2. The chain 3 at the start of each round does not count as a stitch. However, the ch 4 at the start of Row 7 does count as a stitch.
  3. If you are having trouble lining up your waves, it might help to place a stitch marker in the middle stitch of the first ‘3 double crochet in the next stitch’.

INSTRUCTIONS

Ch 139, ss the last ch to the first ch without twisting

I like to use this trick for chaining without a twist. (Video instructs to ch 10, remove the hk from the ch and hold the last loop created, ins the hk in the first ch, slide the 10th ch back on the hk and cont.)

R1: ch 3, dc in the same sp, *(sk nxt ch, 1 dc in nxt ch) two times, 1 dc in nxt ch, 2 dc in the nxt ch, 3 dc in nxt ch, 2 dc in nxt ch, 1 dc in nxt 2 chs, (sk 1 ch, 1 dc in nxt ch) two times; rep from * until the end of the round, the last repeat ends with (sk 1 ch, 1 dc in nxt ch) one time, ss to the first dc. (140 dc)

R2: ch 1, sc in each dc across, ss to first sc. (140 sc)

R3: ch 3, dc in same sp, *(sk 1 sc, 1 dc in the nxt sc) two times, 1 dc in the nxt sc, 2 dc in the nxt sc, 3 dc in the nxt sc, 2 dc in the nxt sc, 1 dc in the nxt 2 scs, (sk 1 sc, 1 dc in the nxt sc) two times, rep from * around, the last repeat ends with (sk 1 sc, 1 dc in the nxt sc) one time, ss to first dc. (140 dc)

The photo below shows how to finish R3, and then start R4.  The orange circle (top photo) shows where to ss to end the round.

The blue circle (bottom right picture) shows where to place the first st of R4.

R4: ch 1, sc in same sp, bpsc around each dc around, ss to first sc. (1 sc & 139 dc)

R5-6: rep row 3-4

R7: ch 4, tr in each st around, ss to first tr. (140 tr) *the ch 4 counts as a st

R8-12: rep row 2-6

R13: rep row r3
